Shopify fulfilment from China for Australian brands: how the setup works
If your products are made in China, your Shopify orders can ship from a China warehouse without the stock ever coming to Australia first. Here is how the setup works step by step: connecting the store, sending stock in, routing rules, the trial order, what the customer sees, and where GST and returns fit.

Who is this setup for?
Australian Shopify brands whose products are manufactured in China: swimwear, apparel, accessories, small homewares, pet products. Today most of them ship the whole production run to Australia, pay to store it, and send international orders back out from Melbourne or Sydney. Fulfilment from China keeps part of the stock at the source and ships orders from there, while Australian stock stays in Australia if you want it to.
Step 1: Connect the store
ShopRest runs as an app inside Shopify Admin for approved merchants. It is not a public App Store install: the store is connected after ShopRest approves it, which normally happens during onboarding. Once connected, paid orders flow to the warehouse automatically and fulfilment and tracking flow back to Shopify, so the customer gets the normal shipping notification.
Step 2: Send stock to the China hub
Your factory delivers finished goods to the ShopRest warehouse in Shanghai. Receiving checks the quantity against your packing list; each SKU is put away and appears in your inventory record. Storage is billed as part of the formal quote, not inside the parcel price. For apparel, optional work such as inspection and re-labelling can be done at this point.
Step 3: Decide the routing rules
Each SKU gets a rule. The simplest is "ship every order from China". The most common for Australian brands is hybrid: if Sydney has stock, the order ships from Sydney; if not, it ships from China. International orders usually ship from China regardless, because that avoids the Australia-to-overseas leg entirely. The rules can be changed at any time without touching the store.
Step 4: Run a trial order
Before moving volume, one or two real orders go through the whole path: label, lane, weight billed, tracking handoff to the Australian carrier, delivery. The trial confirms that the parcel bills at the packed weight you expect and that tracking shows on the Australian side. Most brands run the trial on their best-selling light SKU.
What does the customer see?
A tracked parcel with a reference transit of 7–12 working days on the economy lane, or 4–7 working days on the standard lane (remote postcodes excluded). Orders leave the China warehouse seven days a week. The sensible thing is to state the delivery window on the product page and in the shipping policy, the same way most Australian stores already quote 5–10 business days.
What does it cost?
Two layers. The route page shows the parcel price: for example AUD 6.89 for a 0.2 kg garment to Melbourne, AUD 14.04 at 1 kg, fuel included. The formal quote adds China warehouse handling and any work you ask for. Compare like with like: a Sydney parcel is cheaper above about 0.4 kg, but only after you have paid to get the stock there.
Where do GST and duty fit?
For goods of AUD 1,000 or less sold to Australian consumers, GST is collected at the point of sale by the GST-registered seller or marketplace, whether the parcel ships from China or from Sydney. It is not added to the freight. Bulk stock entered into Australia for the Sydney warehouse goes through import clearance and may attract duty depending on the product and origin; many Chinese-origin goods qualify for ChAFTA rates when the origin rules are met. Check with a licensed customs broker before you build the comparison.
How are returns handled?
China-direct parcels to Australia are not returned to China. Returns are handled in Australia: a brand with Sydney stock returns to the Sydney warehouse, and a brand without it uses its own Australian return address and restocks or disposes locally. Decide this before the first order ships and write it into the returns policy.
How long does it take to go live?
Store connection and account setup take a few days. The first inbound to Shanghai depends on your factory; once stock is received, the trial order can go the same week. Brands that already have the goods in production typically ship their first China-direct orders within two to three weeks of the first conversation.
